The private housing market in Singapore faced a notable slowdown in August 2026, with new home sales dropping significantly. Developers sold only 153 new private homes, excluding executive condominiums, marking a staggering 79.1% decrease from the 731 units sold in July. This downturn is particularly pronounced when compared to the same period last year, with sales plummeting by 92.9% from 2,142 units in August 2025. This decline represents the lowest monthly sales recorded in recent times.
The timing of this slump coincides with Hungry Ghost Month, a period traditionally recognized in Chinese culture as one where many avoid making significant decisions, including purchasing property. Developers often withhold major launches during this time, leading to fewer options for potential buyers. As a result, the combination of fewer new launches and the cultural practices surrounding this month has contributed to the stark decrease in sales figures.
